Excursion to the
Rhön low mountain range
|
|
The Rhön is a mountain range covering parts of Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia. The geology comprises sedimentary rocks of the German Trias (Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Keuper) and tertiary volcanic rocks. An example for the latter ones is the "Wasserkuppe", with about 950 m one of the highest mountains of Hessen! Another highlight are 35 Ma old fossils from the "Sieblos-Lake", which are excellently preserved.
For more information about the nice and unique landscape you can check the homepage of the Rhön biosphere reserve (also in English!!!)
The excursion is planned for two days with an overnight stay in a self-catering accommodation in the vicinity of the Wasserkuppe.

The preliminary date is the 07./08.05.2005. All members of the GRK and IPP are invited. But register soon, because there are only 14 free seats in the busses.

The costs for transport, guidance and accommodation will be provided by the IPP. The food (and the drinks) has (have) to be paid by the participants. Unfortunately the main parts of the excursion will be in German. But facing the fact, that meanwhile almost all members of the IPP and GRK are able to understand German and that the rocks speak their own language anyway, there should be no problem with the language ;-) However, this excursion will be the perfect change and deflection from the computer or lab work.

Please contact us as soon as possible, so that we can book a nice accommodation and organize the details of the excursion. Further ideas for the program and the food are very welcome. Carsten Laukamp (R.108, INF 234) |
